WOW! It's been a crazy year and a half. Most of us hunkered down and focused on our craft. Some of us binge-watched YouTube videos and others created them. Thank goodness for online ordering from DickBlicks.com,  CheapJoes.com, and BHPhotoVideo.com to satisfy our creative needs. What new medium did you experiment with – what did you accomplish? We have learned a lot about ourselves during this time. Hopefully, we have become better people during these times.

The country is now opening up and we need our in-person creative friends fix.  Carol Lynn and Larry Brechner have graciously offered their amazing property for this year's Illiana Artists Annual Plein Air Picnic. We are inviting past members, past juried exhibition artists, and of course current members.  Yes, can bring a guest.

Grab your plein air supplies of choice, a lawn chair, and your own lunch and drink. Larry said he will have the grill fired up if you want to cook your food.

We had Critique Night at our last meeting, and many brought their artwork and enjoyed the conversation. We reviewed our fellow members work while filling our tummies with a delicious SUNDAE MONDAY ice cream social.

Last month's challenge was water. Members brought a wide variety of work including photography, watercolors, oils, pastels and collage art with a water theme. To wrap up the meeting Kathy Los-Rathburn shared her favorite plein air supplies. The only thing Kathy was missing was a fly swatter.

May's door prize was a watercolor course from Dale and Marilee Popovich's online art school, Toweringwindsacademyoffinearts.teachable.com.

Thank you, Steve Bensing and Larry A Brechner for our photos in this issue.

We are having Critique Night this month so bring in your artwork and enjoy the conversation. Limit two pieces framed or unframed. While we are reviewing our fellow members work we will be indulging in lliana Artists SUNDAE MONDAY ice cream social.

This month's challenge is water. Yes, bring in a piece of art with a water theme...anything water and if you do there is a surprise waiting for you.

If we have time we will just talk art. So round up your questions about supplies, art history, social media and the artist, photographing your work, getting your studio organized, shipping artwork, tackling plein air painting, finding your audience...

And this months door prize is a watercolor course from Dale and Marilee Popovich's online art school, Toweringwindsacademyoffinearts.teachable.com.

April Meeting Recap

This Month's Guest Demonstrator
Watercolorist, Kathy Los-Rathburn

Kathy Los-Rathburn walked the group through her thought process – from a photo she took, value study, brushes, paper, and paint. She shared her classical trained skills to the group taking a little over an hour to complete her watercolor.

Kathy's love for art and watercolor, in particular, started when she was quite young. It has now become one of her passions. She loves the challenges of the medium and the happy accidents that can become surprises.

Nature scenes are her favorite to paint, especially the dunes and how they are continually changing. When looking at a simple leaf or twig, there is so much beauty and it often goes unnoticed. She believes in experiencing what she paints so I take my own photo references.

Before beginning every painting, Kathy does value sketches to plan my composition, to work with the contrasting values and colors and to play with negative spaces.

It is through her paintings that she hopes to give to you all the beauty that is around us. All this beauty is ours for the taking … if only we’d open our eyes.

To paint is to admire nature-
To admire nature is to worship God!

BRING AN ARTSY FRIEND.

Monday, March 12 at 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Westminster Presbyterian Church
8955 Columbia Ave, Munster, Indiana 46321

All Artists and art supporters are welcome to attend as we revitalize the Illiana Artists.

We are so happy to announce Illiana Artists have found a new home which is really our old home and friend Westminster Presbyterian Church in Munster. Because of Shari LeMonnier, WPC's Adult & Children's Education Director, we are back sharing our creativity, ideas, thoughts, questions, and accomplishments. Shari told us that WPC is a big supporter of the arms and welcomed us with open arms. Meetings will be held in a new space, room 303.

Because of the passing of our President, MaryAnne Gradisher Kathy Los-Rathburn has volunteered to take over the leadership role of President. Shari LeMonnier has offered to take on the role of Vice-President after the passing of Richard De Pirro. Marilee Jacobi-Popovich will continue with marketing but has resigned the role of treasurer after four years. Suzanne L Dreher has resigned her role as secretary after three years to become treasurer. We are looking for a secretary.

It is my understanding a few years ago Shari LeMonnier gave a hands-on evening workshop titled Marbling Paper. Well by popular demand she will be repeating the demo. A good way to get rid of scraps of paper and make gifts at the same time. Bring a sheet of watercolor paper, any size. Everything else will be supplied.

We will be collecting dues the night of the meeting. Make your checks payable to Illiana Artists. The dues will pay for the newsletter, website hosting, and yearly domain name purchase.

CLICK HERE for a membership form

We offer four types of yearly membership:
• Single adult $25
• Family $40
• Student $10 with student id
• Corporate / Supporter of the Arts $100

We discussed opening the group to anyone, not just Indiana, Illinois, and Michigan residents since we are now a global community. This will be one of the topics we discuss on Monday, March 12th. If you have any thoughts, ideas and or topics you would like to share to make our group a wonderful place bring them with.

We will:
•Continue with our newsletter – quarterly
•Keep the website
•Have our Juried Show in 2019
•Send out emails when we hear about events, show, contests, IA field trips, workshops...

If you have any questions please private message Kathy Los-Rathburn on Facebook. Kathy's additional info is below.
