THE CONCEPT – 2020 HERE’S OUR GAME PLAN
We will be off in January 2020 and regroup in February. Now you may think we are becoming a book club but we are more than that. We are going to read and review Alyson B. Stanfield’s book, I’d Rather Be in the Studio. Each meeting you will be assigned a chapter (Oh, she calls them Action Plans.) You have to read it, take talking notes and be ready to ask questions and share your personal experiences and thoughts. We are getting our business systems in place and on track.

QUESTION: HERE'S HOW THE MEETINGS PLAYOUT
Are you saying the same thing today that you said five years ago about your art business? Write them down. Does it sound like this?
  • You can never make money as an artist. Artists are staving.
  • Where do I start?
  • I should work on an artist statement or update my 20-year-old statement.
  • Why do I need a mailing list?
  • I have no idea how much work I have and it’s history?
  • I have no idea how to get more commissions?
  • Why do I need a website? If you do have one was it built at the turn of the century and it looks like it?
  • How do I make time for social media--it's overwhelming!
  • Can I get sponsors?
  • I just don’t have time!
  • I've been doing this for 30+ years -- what's next?
  • How do I build a legacy?
Does this sound like you five years ago and still sound like you today? Let’s change that! What will you be saying five years in the future? Think of your art business.

FORWARD-THINKING AND FORWARD MOVING
Now to make this work please read the assigned chapter(s) -- see below -- a week or two ahead of time –– not the last minute on the way to the meeting asking Siri or Alexa to read it to you! Do some deep thinking about what was written and how you can better yourself and your art business. You may need to do research to get more out of the topic. Make sure you keep a record of where you found valuable information when you share it with the group. This is for you and the IA members. Or if you are not sure or don’t understand how to apply it to your business then make a list of questions. We also love to hear your ideas. It may inspire someone else.

SO HERE’S HOW WE WILL CONDUCT THE MEETINGS
As said earlier this group is going back to its simplest state – Artists Helping Artists, a Mastermind group and we will all be accountability buddies. You can find all of this info online but there is something magical to share ideas and learn in person.
In the first few meetings, Marilee will fascinate the group. She will assign Action Plans for the next meeting and lead the discussion. Once we get into the grove a different member will fascinate the group.
The timeline below is just a starting point. It can be fluid but we are a business and the need to start thinking and acting like business people.

15:00 minutes - Quickly talk about the group’s business (treasures report, housekeeping…)
12:00 minutes - Alyson B Stanfield podcast with discussion.  We will start each meeting with a 5-6 minute podcast by Alyson B Stanfield. She recorded some 188 episodes around ten years ago but they are solid thoughts that stand-up to today’s art world. The podcast will reflect what we read in her book. Then a couple of minutes of discussion.
45:00 minutes - Review assigned Action Plan(s)
15:00 minutes - Discuss how you will or have incorporated the Action Plan(s) in your art business. How this will better your life and/or streamline your business
10:00 minutes - Q & A or do you have a dilemma you want to throughout to the group?
15:00 minutes - Review next meetings assignment
15:00 minutes - End the meeting with up and coming events/shows
TOTAL: 2 hours 15 minutes

HERE ARE YOUR COMMITMENT RULES
  • Order the book. BUY HERE
  • Get a notebook and a handful of sharpened yellow pencils.
  • Only a positive mindset. No complaining that you don’t have time to do this. There are many successful artists that have figured it out. Don’t you want to be on that success list?
  • Think about what three things you want to accomplish in your art business in 2020. Write it down.
  • Pledge to the group of your commitment to your art business in 2020.
